Travel guide: Facts about Kyrgyzstan and my personal ups and downs in this underrated country

2 years ago I never considered visiting Kyrgyzstan, but I’m so happy I did last year. It’s a country with breathtaking nature that keeps impressing you. It’s an authentic country without the crowds where you can experience the true nomadic lifestyle as the Kyrgyz people have lived for generations. Furthermore it’s a perfect visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

We spent 2 weeks in Kyrgyzstan. Our trip to this country is one of my favorite adventures from last year. I was so positively surprised about Kyrgyzstan and I don’t understand why there aren’t more people speaking about this spectacular country. I definitely recommend you to go before it gets too crowded!

I can’t wait to share this spectacular and hidden gem with all of you!

Here is a mini guide with good stuff to know before visiting:

In Kyrgyzstan they have their own language called Kyrgyz and many people also speak Russian. Don’t expect everyone to speak English, we met quite a lot of locals who didn’t speak English – Especially our drivers didn’t understand English, but our hosts at the places we stayed spoke English.

The most common religion in Kyrgyzstan is Islam.

Kyrgyzstan has its own currency called Som (KGS). The US dollar rate in Kyrgyzstan today is: $1 is around 89 KGS. This might change, I always recommend you to look up the latest currency rate.

We had different drivers driving us around. Be aware that you drive in the right side of the road but many of their cars are old British cars and therefore have the driver seat in the opposite side of the car.

It’s common to encounter animals like sheep and cows walking on the road in front of the car.

One of our drivers had his son with him on job.
The son was sitting between me and the driver

Kyrgyzstan is a sunny country. The country has warm summers (colder in the mountains) and cold and snowy winters.

If you have been following our 2 weeks adventure you know the weather can vary. One moment you are at a lake in your shorts and the sun is shinning. The next you’re in the mountains covered in snow. Depending on where you are going, bring layers for different weather situations.

Most places we got served a mix of soup, bread, jam, candy and a main dish with meat, vegetables and rice, bulgur or potatoes. You always get served hot tea with your food.

Here is my honest opinion about my short time in Kyrgyzstan:

  • Spectacular and impressive nature
  • It feels authentic traveling in the country
  • Our nomadic lifestyle riding horses and sleeping in yurts
  • Very affordable
  • Hiking in breathtaking nature
  • Traveling around with our friend
  • Adventure packed tour
  • No crowds
  • Unspoiled nature
  • Unique activities
  • Their food gets a bit boring when you’re eating almost the same all the time (sorry)
  • The weather surprised us – The snowy season was extended and we hadn’t the proper clothes for it (arrived in the snowy mountains in “summer clothes”)
  • We couldn’t communicate with our drivers (but they had our route under control)
  • The taste of fermented horse milk
  • Their NOT so comfortable toilets (holes in the ground) when we were on outdoor adventures

YES 100 % – Kyrgyzstan is one of my favorite adventures from last year! Their nature is breathtaking! I felt connected with nature in a good way. This tour doesn’t remind me of any other tour – It was unique and authentic!

Yes I could definitely see myself revisiting this country one day!

If you consider visiting Kyrgyzstan, I recommend you to do so! I hope this mini guide clarified some of the good things to know before visiting. If you have any questions you are always welcome to write them here (under the blog post) or directly to my instagram profile @dailytravelmoment.

Enjoy your planning and stay in Kyrgyzstan!
