Travel guide to visit Iceland

Welcome to the land of fire and ice – Iceland! A country that captivates the hearts of both adventure and nature lovers.

We did a 8 day road trip in Iceland and loved it!

To make it even easier for you to plan your visit I have collected “good things to know when you visit Iceland” in this general guide to visit the country. Here you will find inspiration about the weather, food, transportation and more. Furthermore I will share my personal ups and downs in the country.

Travel guide to visit Iceland

The country of fire and ice offers so much spectacular and breathtaking nature to explore!

To make it easier for you to plan your visit I have collected “good things to know when you visit Iceland” in this general guide to visit the country:

Here is a guide with good things to know before visiting:

Language:
Iceland has its own language called Icelandic. We didn’t have any problem getting around speaking English. For the first time traveling outside of Denmark we met locals speaking Danish too, that’s rare when you come from such a small country (Iceland has been a part of the Danish Kingdom back in the days…)

Religion:
The most common religion in Iceland is Christianity and you will find a lot of small scenic churches around the country.

Currency:
Iceland has its own currency called Icelandic Krona (ISK). 1€ is around 146 ISK.
Be aware it isn’t a cheap country to visit. You can find what we paid for our 8 days in Iceland in a previous post: Iceland travel costs.

Transportation:
It’s easy to rent a car and drive around in Iceland. If you don’t drive I recommend you to take buses – There is no public trains in Iceland.
The road conditions on the Ring Road are great. If you get outside the Ring Road you will probably end up on gravel roads. Some roads can only be accessed by 4×4 vehicles.

Weather:
If you have been following my latest posts and stories from Iceland it might not surprise you that the weather in Iceland can be rough – Really windy and cold!

The country has all 4 different weather seasons: Spring, summer, fall and winter. The best season to visit depends on your goal for your visit – Do you want to watch the Northern light, would you like the weather to be warmer or would you like the weather to be snowy and so on?

The weather can be freezing cold

Good to know apps:
Here are 4 apps that are good to know when you visit Iceland: My Aurora Forecast & Alerts, Vedur, Safetravel Iceland and Parka – You can find a description of each app in a previous post: Apps for Iceland.

Ups and downs in Iceland:

Here is my honest opinion about my time in Iceland after spending 8 days on a road trip there:

UPS:
– All the spectacular nature
– More nature 😉 As a nature lover there is so many beautiful places to explore
– Road trip
– It was easy to navigate the island by car
– Unique and fun ice activities such as snowmobile riding and kayaking in a glacier lagoon
– The ice element like glaciers and icebergs (normally we visit sunny destinations)

DOWNS:
– The prices were a bit high (compared to many of the other countries we have visited)
– The weather was cold most of the time with a lot of rain and strong wind

Godafoss – One of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland

Was it worth it?
Yes it was definitely worth it. We experienced so many beautiful and cool places!

Would I visit again?
Yes, but if I go again I would bring more warm clothes and sleep inside and not in a tent – Or go when it’s warmer. But we loved the freedom that road tripping provides.
I would love to explore Iceland during summer and winter time too.

If you consider visiting Iceland, I highly recommend you to do so! I hope this mini guide clarified some of the good things to know before visiting, if you have questions, you’re always welcome to write them here (under the blog post) or directly to my instagram profile @dailytravelmoment.

Enjoy your planning and beautiful stay in Iceland!
