Tanzania travel costs

Last updated: 12.12.23

In this post I share cost transparency to make it easier for you to create a travel budget for your trip to Tanzania. I have divided the Tanzania travel costs into transportation, accommodation, food, experiences and other.

Tanzania travel costs

We spend 1 month in Tanzania! A month filled with unique moments, a lot of fun, new challenges, new friends, a lot of laughs, work, wildlife experiences, luxury stays, postcard beaches, annoying power cuts, a budget hostel, sunsets, safari game drives and so much more!

In this travel blog post I share what we spend per person for 3 weeks in Tanzania where 2 of the weeks were in Zanzibar:

Note: We actually spent 1 month in Tanzania and not only 3 weeks. But one of the weeks was a safari content creator trip – that means I didn’t pay for this week besides tips and therefore I haven’t counted it in these calculations. This week included all our safari trips, which I highly recommend everyone to do in Tanzania, but be aware it of course raises the budget/expenses of your trip.

Transportation: $235 / $11 per day
This includes our flight ticket from mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar, tuk tuk rides and taxis.
This is WITHOUT our flight tickets to Tanzania from Denmark – for those we paid: 514 $ per person.

Accommodation: $560 / $25 per day
We stayed at a cheap hostel in Zanzibar. I would recommend paying a bit extra and staying for a shorter time instead.

Food: $451 / $20 per day
We had breakfast at all our accommodations. Most days we only ate out one time and then had snacks. Many of our meals in Zanzibar were restaurants on the beach.

Experiences: $57 / $3 per day
When living as digital nomads we need time to work too and therefore we don’t pay for activities every day. Some days we do free stuff like relaxing on the beach or exploring an area. Highlights are a snorkeling trip and a turtle sanctuary in Zanzibar.
This price is WITHOUT safari – but I definitely recommend you to do game drives when you’re in Tanzania!!

Turtle sanctuary

Other: $110 / $5 per day
This includes shopping, eSIM card, manicure, hairdresser and laundry.

Total: $1413 / $64 per day

We had a great time in Tanzania and I will definitely consider going back on another safari one day!
