Zanzibar travel costs

Last updated: 19.12.23

Welcome to Zanzibar – A tropical island with clear water on postcard worthy beaches and beautiful sunsets.

We spend 1 month in Tanzania and 2 of the weeks were in Zanzibar.

In this post I share cost transparency to make it easier for you to create a travel budget for your trip to Zanzibar. I have divided the Zanzibar travel costs into transportation, accommodation, food, experiences and other.

Zanzibar travel costs

Here is our Zanzibar cost breakdown per person for 2 weeks (15 days):

Transportation: $55 / $4 per day
This includes tuk tuk rides, taxis and a boat ride.
This is WITHOUT our flight tickets from Tanzania mainland to Zanzibar – for those we paid: $129 per person.

Accommodation: $377 / $25 per day
We stayed at a cheap hostel in Nungwi in the northern part of the island. I would recommend paying a bit extra and staying for a shorter time instead. As I’m getting older and work during my stays I need more comfort. We had some power cuts = no wifi, no air condition and no light = bad work conditions.

Our hostel was only a 5 minutes walk from the beach

Food: $350 / $23 per day
We had breakfast included at our accommodation. Most days we only ate out one time and then had snacks. Many of our meals were at restaurants on the beach with a sunset view.

Experiences: $45 / $3 per day
When living as digital nomads we need time to work too and therefore we don’t pay for activities every day. Some days we do free stuff like relaxing on the beach. Highlights was a turtle sanctuary (Mnarani Natural Aquarium) and a Mnemba Island snorkeling trip.

Other: $92 / $6 per day

This includes souvenirs, eSIM card, visa, and laundry. We paid 26 $ for laundry.

Total: $919 / $61 per day

Another beautiful sunset from the beach

To be honest I think Zanzibar is a bit overrated and not the best place as a digital nomad. If I ever go back it would be for a shorter time and more luxury – only vacation.

I hope this helps you to get an idea of the prices in Zanzibar.

As mentioned we had 1 month in total in Tanzania. You can find our travel break down for Tanzania here: Tanzania travel costs.
