Madeira travel costs
After spending 1 month on this Portuguese island I am in love!!
The island is known as Hawaii of Europe and called Madeira. The lush island has incredible nature, beautiful waterfalls, mountains, raw coastlines, a black sand beach, a mysterious forest, natural pools, a fresh sea breeze and so much more!
We enjoyed 1 month on this beautiful island in January 2023. We shared our costs of living with a friend who visited us 11 of the days.
Here is our Madeira cost breakdown per person for 1 month (32 days):
Transportation: 383 € / 12 € per day
We paid for taxi from the airport to our Airbnb and rented a car for 18 of the days. This includes gas and parking as well.
The above travel costs are without flight tickets. We flew between Christmas and New Year so the flight tickets weren’t cheap!
We paid 176 € from Luxembourg to Porto and 165 € from Porto to Madeira per person. My luggage was overweight so we paid 2×50 € extra.
Accommodations: 863 € / 27 € per day
We found an Airbnb with a large discount for stays of more than 4 weeks – A discount of 49 % due to the duration of the stay and saved 1490 € (of the total booking price).
One night we slept at a luxury hotel to celebrate my birthday.
Food: 584 € / 18 € per day
We did a mix of eating out and cooking our own food.
Bonus info: You can’t visit Madeira without trying these two traditional foods: Bolo do Caco and Espetada. Bolo do Caco is a garlic flatbread made with potatoes. Espetada is a beef skewer. Both foods taste delicious!
Experiences: 192 € / 6 € per day
The most expensive activities we did were canyoning and a whale and dolphin watching boat trip.
Total: 2021 € / 63 € per day
We had a great time and I definitely recommend you to visit Madeira!
