Why go on a food tour?
What is a food tour?
As the name amplifies a food tour is a tour about food! Generally it’s a guided tour about diving into different flavors of a destination. A guided tour where you typically visit a variety of different restaurants, cafes and/or street food stands to try different dishes and beverages. Think of it like a pub-crawl but for food. Making it the ideal way for travelers and food lovers to discover a new destination’s culinary scene. Food tours are not only fun, but they are also a great way to try delicious and local food you might otherwise miss out on.
Why go on a food tour?
Firstly I have to say how much we love food tours! It’s a perfect way to explore a new place through its cuisine and so far we have done 6 in different countries.
Let’s get into why I think a food tour is a great idea:
First of all you try so many new dishes you didn’t know about and the local guide takes you to the best local spots.
Second food tours are more than just food. During a tour you explore the different neighborhoods accompanied by a local guide, who provides you with a better understanding of the place you’re visiting. It might feel overwhelming to navigate a new country, which makes it even nicer to be guided around and get a lot of tips from a local.
We always try to do the food tour at the beginning of a trip, so we know what to eat for the remainder of our visit and to obtain other local tips for the rest of our stay in that country.
Furthermore it is a great way to learn more about a country’s culture, traditions, history and customs.

In this section is our personal experience and opinion expressed about our experience with a Chania food tour.
We met at the meeting point in front of Domino’s Pizza, that was easy to find. At this location we met our nice welcoming local guide and 3 American travelers, who also where a part of the tour.
On our food tour our guide told us a lot of interesting facts about the food and Chania. During the tour as always Nicko and I rated the food and beverage on a scale from 1-10 (10 = the best).

Aroma of Nature for herbs (Psarros) was the 4. stop on our tour. While taking a break from the eating we visited a local herb store with a very passionate owner. The smells and products were amazing (we also ended up buying a mixture of Cretan herbs for tea and a BBQ spice mix).
After that we went to Kipros. Which was one of my favorite stops. At this stop we had very tasty gyro pitas. We shared one with chicken and one with pork.
Points for gyro pitas:

At the end of the tour it was time for some dessert. Our last food stop was at Kronos. During this stop we had two different kinds of loukoumades (kind of a Greek donut): One with chocolate and one without.

Related questions about food tours
Can I do a food tour if I have any food allergies or special preferences?
Absolutely! You can still participate in a food tour even if you have allergies or special dietary needs. Often in the beginning of our tours we get asked if we have any allergies – A few times we answered that question during the booking process. The guides are used to people with allergies and know how to get around it. On our Playa del Carmen food tour one in the group was allergic to peanuts for example.
If you’re in doubt about the company you want to do the food tour with, write them a message before booking.
Are there different types of food tours?
Yes a food tour is not just a food tour. It comes in a variety of themes. Besides local food you can find tours with a special focus if you like. We have done a dessert food tour in New York and a street food tour in Kuala Lumpur. So if you have a sweet tooth or a specific interest, it may be possible to find tours specific for that.
What do you bring to a food tour?
You don’t have to bring anything special other than your booking confirmation. Furthermore a good appetite and your happy mood is great to bring. Comfortable clothes and shoes are nice to wear during a tour.
What language do they speak on a food tour?
Even though it’s a local showing you around, our guides have always been great at speaking English.
The Chania food tour is offered in English.
Always check before buying a tour what language the guide speaks.
When is the best time to go on a food tour?
We recommend you to do a food tour at the beginning of your trip. This way you get a great introduction to the area and what kind of food you would like to eat more of. E.g. in Kuala Lumpur I discovered how much I love Roti Canai – A dish I had never heard about before our food tour, but a dish I enjoyed multiple times the rest of our one month stay in Malaysia.
How big are the groups on a food tour?
Group sizes depend on the specific tour (you can read about their max group sizes before booking).
We have done tours with up to 10 people but also tours with only Nicko and I + the guide.
On our Chania food tour it was just Nicko and I, the guide and 3 American travelers. This food tour will have a maximum of 10 participants.
Will I be full at the end of the food tour?
We have never done a food tour without feeling happily full in the end.
If I don’t like it, do I have to eat it?
No you are not obligated to eat everything you get served. Some people don’t eat the whole portion to leave room for later stops. You do you! Do what you feel best about. But I encourage you to try a bite of everything before deciding if you like it or not, sometimes you might be surprised.
How do I find food tours?
When it comes to discovering the best food tours, we always turn to Viator. It’s incredibly easy to use – You just type “your destination’s name” along with “food tour” in the search bar and you will get a list of options. It’s been our go to for finding these kinds of food experiences and has never let us down.
Can I cancel the food tour?
The cancellation policy of Viator allows you to cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the tour and get a full refund (always a great idea to double check if their cancellation policy may have been changed before booking).
