Last updated: 19.09.23

Is it expensive to be a full time traveler? The answer depends on many things! In this blog post I show you how my rent is cheaper as a full time traveler compared to my previous rent in Luxembourg.

I show you all the numbers and what I’m “saving” on accommodations after I started this nomadic lifestyle!

How my rent is cheaper as a full time traveler

It has been cheaper for us staying at hotels around the world compared to our previous apartment rent in Luxembourg!

When I say us – I refer to my partner Nicko and I.

Yes that’s correct! From the beginning of 2023 we resigned our apartment in Luxembourg and started our new lifestyle as digital nomads and since then we have used less money on our “homes” compared to before.

It might sound too good to be true, that you can live cheaper in hotels around the world compared to an apartment one place, so let me be transparent and walk you through the numbers:

Our rent in the apartment in Luxembourg: $2178/month + $267 spending. Meaning $80 per day.

So far we have stayed in the following countries this year:

CountryDaysPrice ($)
Madeira, Portugal321879
Tanzania221120
Oman91366
Thailand281736
Malaysia331684
Uzbekistan2108
Kyrgyzstan250
Romania7718

Furthermore we stayed in Tanzania (8 more days), Kyrgyzstan (11 more days) and Switzerland (7 days), but these were either package deals where I have no clue of the accommodation price or free stays due to collaborations – Therefore I have removed those.

The rest of the time (99 days) we stayed in Denmark, but here we are lucky enough to stay at our parents’ houses for free (thank you!). I have removed those days as well to paint a more realistic picture.

Without free stays and unknown prices we have paid a total of $8661.

Averaging that on the 135 days equals $64 per day.

But we also stayed for free, mostly in Denmark! So if we look at all the days of the year so far, we have paid $35 per day.

Sorry for all the numbers and long breakdown!

CONCLUSION: Last year we paid $80 per day for our apartment in Luxembourg – this year as nomads we have so far paid $35 per day – AROUND HALF THE PRICE!

We also saved a lot on hotel rooms because we are 2 people. And some of the prices even includes breakfast in the stay.

Most of the time we stay in apartments or hotels – This could have been done cheaper with hostels most likely.

Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive! But although we have saved money on stays we have also used more money on food, activities and flight tickets, compared to before becoming full time travelers.
