Prices in Crete: A complete travel costs breakdown
Visiting Crete
Crete is not only a Greek island but also the largest island in Greece. It’s a paradise located in the Mediterranean Sea and has some gorgeous beaches with clear water. One of those unique beaches is known for its pink sand and called Elafonisi Beach. Therefore it’s a perfect spot for any traveler that loves a chill beach day.
But Crete isn’t only about beaches. Besides beautiful beaches the island also offers you stunning nature with dramatic gorges and mountains. You find plenty of ways to connect with the outdoors.
Furthermore you can’t skip a meeting with the tasty Greek cuisine when visiting Crete. A fantastic way to dive into the local gastronomy is by joining a food tour. I highly recommend the food tour we experienced in Chania – It was such a great way to taste different Greek food in company with a local guide while exploring the charming city Chania. Which is often referred to as the “capital of Crete”. It was definitely one of my highlights from our 2 weeks stay in Crete. Besides the food tour exploring Chania is a great experience also to add to your itinerary.
Prices in Crete
You may wonder “Is Crete expensive?” To help you answer this, I’m being transparent about our own travel expenses during our 2 weeks in Crete at the end of September and the beginning of October 2024.
This is our Crete costs breakdown. It includes what we spent per person for 2 weeks in Crete:
Cost of accommodation in Crete
Accommodation price*: 1222€ – 87€ per day
For this trip our accommodation expenses covers more than just a hotel stay – Typically it only includes accommodation and perhaps some breakfast.
*However this time we booked a package deal that included hotel accommodation, daily breakfast and flight tickets (flight tickets from Denmark and return).
We found a nice deal online and compared the prices to others, then we decided it was worth booking a package deal this time.
Therefore this price is per person for a shared hotel room and a 2 week stay at the 5 star hotel Porto Platanias Beach Resort & Spa with breakfast and flight tickets included. We booked the deal through a Scandinavian travel company.
Cost of transportation in Crete
Transportation price: 115€ – 8€ per day
Our transportation cost includes transportation from the airport to Platanias and back. We used taxis and paid 50€ per trip. Furthermore it covers a taxi trip to Chania and return. Here we paid around 23€ each way. As mentioned we stayed in Porto Platanias Beach Resort & Spa. It’s approximately 11 km (6 miles) from Chania.
Beside the Crete taxi costs we also rented a car for one day. We rented a small car (Suzuki Celerio) through our hotel and paid 50€. We drove to the beautiful Elafonisi Beach. Furthermore we paid 5€ for parking and 30€ for gas.
If you’re planning to rent a car in advance of your trip, you can look for Crete car rental deals online at platforms like DiscoverCars. They allow you to easily compare prices and rent a car. If you’re traveling during peak season, it especially may be a good idea to rent the car in advance. We visited in the beginning of October and didn’t have any trouble arranging a car on short notice.
Note: My transportation category does not cover flight tickets – This is covered from our holiday package deal included in the accommodation category.
Cost of food in Crete
Food: 270€ – 19€ per day
This covers a mix of grocery shopping and dining out. We were eating out approximately once a day.
This is without breakfast, because it was included in our hotel stay. Which is a great help to reduce our food costs.
Another tip to keep your food budget down: Many places serve free water at their restaurant.
Example of prices for two people:
- One gyros: 4,50€ (per person)
- Greek lunch with ocean view: 19,25€
- Indian food: 29,80€
- Ice cream: 2,5€ (per person)
- Italian food: 31,24€
Cost of experiences in Crete
Experiences: 100€ – 7€ per day
This category includes all the fun! Like a food tour (with tips). We did an incredible food tour in the city of Chania – You can read about it here: “The best Chania food tour: Explore the flavors of Crete”.
We love using Viator to find and book activities when exploring a new destination. That’s also how we found the amazing food tour in Chania.
Furthermore it covers umbrella and sunbeds rental at the pink beach – Elafonisi Beach. Where we had such an incredible day tour exploring and relaxing. In case that is interesting for your Crete itinerary you can find more information about it here: “Guide to visiting the beautiful Elafonisi Beach: A pink beach paradise in Crete”.
Other costs in Crete
Other: 72€ – 5€ per day
This includes small expenses like paid toilets and tourist taxes. However it doesn’t cover personal shopping such as my new bikini as it’s not relevant to the travel related costs.
Total costs in Crete
Total: 1779€ – 126€ per day
The total price per person was 1779€ when traveling two people together.
If you compare this to my other cost breakdowns (find links below) be aware that normally I don’t include the flight tickets in the cost breakdown from the destination.
Traveling in Crete can be more budget friendly. An easy way to save money may be choosing something other than a 5 star hotel and cooking your own meals. And of course you could easily spend way more money too – If you prefer an extra luxury experience with more paid activities and eating out at expensive restaurants.
Now it’s your turn to plan your luxury stay or budget holiday Crete. Whether you are planning a week in Crete or longer, I hope this breakdown of prices in Crete was helpful and gave you a better idea of Crete living costs.
